Las Memorias, El Conejo y La Trompeta

The lake's waters held the sky upside down
As a rabbit named Fulgor floated on the surface...
Fulgor reveled in the silk-like lake, illuminated by constellations from another time,
And the endless darkness of the new moon.
Gazing into the tranquil waters with his four gray eyes—
For like all rabbits of Selene, Fulgor was born with two eyes in front and two behind,
To see what was coming and what had passed...
So, Fulgor celebrated his seventh century as the protector of Selene's memories,
And it seemed that all would continue for another seven centuries...
Until he felt it...
From nothingness...
The precise sensation of a memory beginning to fade.
Impossible, he whispered, emerging from the water in unforeseen delirium.
Fulgor and the other guardians in the celestial hierarchy of memories felt existential pride
In the fact that not a single fragment of memory had ever disappeared here.
Grateful to exist in Selene, the infallible dimension where those born
Guard the past as if it were the present...
Though he took pride in never having lost a personal or collective memory...
Fulgor had occasionally wondered, over the course of seven centuries...
What does it feel like to forget?
As he emerged from the lake, he knew.
And immediately understood that he could never describe it to anyone.
After leaving the water,
The rabbit ran with all his might, guided by the stars,
Until he reached the secret cabin of his friend Sies,
The Guardian of the Naps in the Infinite Garden of Childhood...
Fulgor trusted that his friend of so many centuries would listen without judgment.
He knocked on the alabaster door with a trembling paw, and moments later,
Sies opened the door with her emblematic delicacy and a mischievous smile...
She was excited to see her friend, before noticing the expression in each of his four eyes...
Without saying more, they checked their surroundings to see that they were alone,
And entered the cabin.
They sat for a moment, sheltered by silence and the symphony of cicadas around them.
(Cicadas, of course, are an essential element in protecting memories...)
Sies stood, warmed some tea of sunset memories, and returned to her chair.
With a steady gaze, full of conviction and courage, she looked at him, determined.
"So, did it happen... what never should?"
Fulgor nodded, and she understood. Without another word, Sies gathered various miscellaneous amulets representing the essence of her craft—
A mahogany knob, a shell from the peninsula, a key from the house she lived in three centuries ago, a pearl (that was once a tear),
Joining them to her skirt, she prepared to leave.
They stood at the door, and together they drew a map in the air to the Alabaster Cave.
There lived the Guardian of the Memories Shared by Ancestors or Dreamed on Sundays.
By desiring entry with an open heart, suddenly, the threshold appeared.
They entered and found the cave illuminated by invisible lanterns, creating reflections of the dance
Of the Guardian of the Memories Shared by Ancestors or Dreamed on Sundays—
Her dance and song blessed their arrival.
At the center of the cave, a stone served as a table, filled with the dimension's delights.
With each word, a new amulet formed on the table and another around the guardian’s neck,
As if the amulets protected the root of the song.
In response, Sies began to connect with the song. She closed her eyes and listened. And understood.
They waited for her to finish her song before sitting around the table to explain the situation.
Domi, the Guardian of the Memories Shared by Ancestors or Dreamed on Sundays, sat with them, already knowing...
"It's her again."
They were surprised by the response. "Her?"
Sies turned to Fulgor and sincerely asked, "Did you feel her?"
And so, Fulgor realized that he had indeed felt her before, but hadn’t grasped who or what she was...
The only thing clear was that she wasn’t from Selene.
On particularly hot days, Fulgor's grandmother had told him details of reality,
And had mentioned that in extraordinary moments, a soul from one world could communicate with another...
The present... He had asked his grandmother, "What’s so valuable about the present that makes one want to be there?"
His grandmother had laughed without answering. And Fulgor understood.
The Guardian of the Cave announced that Fulgor would have to go to the earthly dimension—to reality.
She stood up again to dance while explaining that before leaving,
He would need to visit the Guardian of the Memories of Sudden Farewells...
She was the only one who knew the path to reality.
And she would also give him the final amulet,
Which would help Her understand that she wasn’t alone in her longing...
Fulgor looked at Sies with a gesture, expressing that he would have to continue alone.
He gathered the amulets from the table, joined them to his skirt,
And advanced toward the threshold. He entered and descended the stairs, surrounded by darkness,
Trusting each step... Until a distant, warm light began to appear, inherited from a candle.
And so he found himself in a cozy chamber, where the Guardian, known as Tinas, focused on her sacred task.
Without turning around, she spoke.
"You came for the last amulet?"
Fulgor nodded, knowing she would perceive it. Without another word, Tinas stood and opened a drawer,
Taking out a branch from an olive tree.
"This branch represents what you must do.
Humans fill memories with whims that sometimes have nothing to do with the truth, and more and more, they try to forget.
Almost everyone wants to run toward a shapeless future. Complete memories are taken for granted, eventually neglected,
And the ones forgotten are never recovered...
Therefore, here the present begins to fade, and in reality, the past begins to vanish..."
For an instant, they united in this forgetfulness, and in the attempt of one person not to forget.
When Tinas finished, Fulgor asked,
"But why?"
Tinas laughed, without explaining further. And Fulgor understood.
Because it is so.
Tinas handed him the branch and pointed to a door that hadn’t existed a few seconds ago,
"There you will find the passage between dimensions. As soon as you enter, she will know you are there.
Give her the amulets, and tell her what you see."
With that, Tinas turned away, returning to her shawl of farewells,
And Fulgor understood that he didn’t need to understand, only to trust and continue...
He opened the door and entered to see a dark wooden hallway, with stained glass windows.
It wasn’t possible to see what was outside.
He stayed there for several moments, listening to his own breathing,
Until the sound of footsteps began in the distance, approaching.
It was Her. She seemed to be in a state of acceptance, as if she had cried for several hours and now felt different, strengthened by her grief.
She looked at him with curiosity, and it seemed she was going to say something,
But instead, she just laughed. Fulgor did the same, and suddenly he saw it—
What his grandmother had told him might happen—he saw an entire life,
Full of everyday moments, exciting, painful, comforting, beautiful, unjust, surprising, and subtle and thunderous,
And he understood. None was more important than the other.
And by wanting to protect only the past, the present could lose its essential texture,
And could not turn into memories... And by wanting to escape the past, the present would disappear with it...
Fulgor tied the cord that united the amulets to his skirt and took out the olive branch from his sleeve.
With his gaze, he told Her that each amulet had a unique use,
So she could remind the other beings of the present that they held a treasure of memories,
And though they seemed painful or insignificant, each memory accompanied them, always,
Shaping their reality, so they would never be alone.
And she said with her gaze...
"I realize that if a memory is held at a particular angle, it expands,
And unites with the present and with the future."
Hearing her, Fulgor felt that the sound of her voice was inevitable music in his life.
And with her words, he felt that he was floating again,
And so Fulgor returned to the lake of silk,
While weaving an eternal fragment of the past with an ephemeral moment of the present...
